My first teaching job after college was at a haunted elementary school built on the site of the famous Hartford Circus Fire of 1944 where the piano often played itself. Those memories along with the desire to create a piece that did not depend on people for its performance were the inspiration for this piece. The electronic pulses heard only last for the duration of one second. The sustained pitches are the result of the piano's sympathetic resonance. “playerless piano” is performed when a CD score of prerecorded, one second long, sine wave pulses are played through a bass amplifier that is placed under a grand or baby- grand piano. The sustain pedal of the piano is depressed by a wooden wedge.
